Molecular Chemistry of Secondary Organic Aerosol Formed in Photochemical Aging of Primary Anthropogenic Emissions

EMSL Project ID
39957

Abstract

We propose to examine molecular level processes taking place in anthropogenic secondary organic aerosols (SOA) using recently developed tools of high resolution mass spectrometry. The proposed project will address, but is not limited to the following questions. (1) What is the molecular composition of water soluble and insoluble organic compounds in SOA produced by photochemical oxidation of primary vehicular emissions in laboratory experiments? (2) What are the unique molecular components of SOA that can be indicative of its formation from semi-volatile vehicular emissions? (3) What are the key differences between molecular composition of particles with short and long photochemical ages? (4)What are the light absorbing properties of SOA? What are the molecular structures of light absorbers, e.g., brown carbon in SOA samples with significant absorption coefficients for UV and visible light? How does brown carbon evolve as a result of atmospheric aging? (5) What are the similarities and differences between molecular composition of laboratory generated aerosols and fine particles collected in urban areas, such as Los Angeles?
