Rui Zhao
Chemist

Rui Zhao is a chemist with the Biomolecular Pathways team. He is also an educator in the field of analytical chemistry. For over 30 years, Zhao has been involved in developing new methods and techniques of analytical chemistry for environmental and new biological applications.

Zhao’s current research is focused on development and application of new nanoscale high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems with mass spectrometry for proteomics (top-down and bottom-up), the degradomic-peptidomics and phosphor-proteomics. He has developed the new methods for column packing (from 15 mm ID to 500 mm ID) and the high-efficiency nanoscale liquid chromatography coupled on-line with mass spectrometry through nano electrospray ionization, such as a ultra-sensitive nanoscale HPLC system, fully automated four-column capillary liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system, automated 2-D HPLC system, and automated metal-free nanoscale reversed phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) system etc. Those new methods have been successfully applied to proteomic projects. His experience and expertise have prepared him well to take a key role to develop a parallel PRISM fractionation system for high throughput fractionation, analyte focusing, and target selection.
