FICUS Projects Using EMSL and ARM

In 2016, we issued a small pilot call for joint proposals, which would integrate the capabilities of both the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) and Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility, while streamlining the process for investigators. This was modeled after the existing FICUS call between EMSL and DOE JGI, where researchers can integrate the capabilities of both facilities into a single research project.

The 2016 call focused on topics in atmospheric aerosol science that would advance the understanding of the molecular, physical, and/or optical properties of aerosol particles that influence and control macroscopic climate-relevant processes, such as cloud formation, radiation balance, and precipitation. Proposals were expected to take advantage of both the analytical instrumentation and capabilities in the EMSL and the infrastructure and observational capabilities of the ARM Climate Research Facility. Under the pilot call, proposals were limited in scope to no more than a few weeks of data collection of samples at the surface or near surface at ARM’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) site in Oklahoma with subsequent analysis at EMSL that could be completed by September 2017.
