NUFO 2014 Annual Meeting

Bridging Science Across National User Facilities

April 30-May 2, 2014
EMSL, Richland, WA

The 2014 Annual Meeting of the National User Facility Organization (NUFO) was hosted by EMSL April 30-May 2 in Richland, Washington. This year's meeting, "Bridging Science Across National User Facilities," challenged attendees to look for new ways of collaborating across national user facilities to accelerate scientific advancement. Keynote speakers, included DOE Office of Science Public Affairs Director Rick Borchelt, who addressed the benefits of team science as well as the potential challenges. Facility Directors, User Executive Committee chairs, managers/administrators, communications teams and researchers broke out into groups to openly discuss and identify, from their unique perspectives, the potential opportunities and barriers in policies, operational requirements and user concerns for multidisciplinary joint science. A list of challenge questions by breakout group was available for consideration prior to the meeting. A close-out report of findings and recommendations from these sessions to be used as a working roadmap for cross-facility projects will be presented to the User Facility directors and NUFO membership at the conclusion of the meeting.

An optional dinner and wine tour is scheduled on May 1, and includes short tours of two local wineries, followed by dinner at Kiona Vineyards. The invited speaker, Dr. Antonio Busalacchi, is Director of the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center and Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science at the University of Maryland. Attendees may choose to attend the dinner only; and companion tickets may be purchased for either event.

Under the definitions of the Conference Management guidelines, the 2014 NUFO Meeting is exempt from conference reporting requirements, and the DOE Conference Management System has been updated to reflect this exemption.
