Examine the Compositions of the Black Sands in Northern Oregon

EMSL Project ID
18424

Abstract

Beaches on the Oregon Coast have several kinds of sand, white quartz and feldspar sands, and two types of black sands rich in iron and titanium. Black sands in southern Oregon come from the Klamath Mountains. Those in northern Oregon probably come from Grand Ronde basalts. The latter segregate on the beaches by density into layers sometimes several feet deep. This project is to examine the compositions of the black sands in northern Oregon by electron microscopy and to compare them to Grand Ronde basalts from local headlands.
