IR and RAMAN Analysis of Water Diffusion in the Surface of Glasses for Nuclear Waste Immobilization

EMSL Project ID
19858

Abstract

It is proposed to analyze VHT (Vapor-Hydration Test) glass sample surface cross-sections using IR and RAMAN spectroscopy for examining water diffusion. The samples represent glasses for nuclear waste vitrification. The reaction of water with those glasses (corrosion) was found to be the primary cause of the release of radionuclides, which needs to be minimized considering all waste-form parameters. Electron microscopy images did show corrosion layers but it was not clear if water diffusion occurs beyond the corrosion layers.
