Incorporation of Cellulose Nanocrystals Into PHB/PHV Copolymer

EMSL Project ID
23291

Abstract

The objective of this research is to devise methods to produce nano-scale crystalline cellulose (NCC) with aspect ratios between 10-80 and to characterize the interphase of the crystals, specific to tailored modification for the incorporation into bio-based polymer matrices. Specifically, NCC are produced utilizing an acid hydrolysis technique, precipitated the NCC from microcrystalline templates. The resulting NCC will be characterized utilizing TEM, SEM, and AFM prior to being incorporated into a biopolymer such as PHB/PHV.
