Measurement of the Two-Photon Absorption Cross-Section of Natural Dyes

EMSL Project ID
2339

Abstract

We propose to measure the two-photon absorption cross-section of natural anthocyanidin chromophores with an aim towards two-photon confocal microscopy imaging of living plant tissue. The cross-section shall be measured using several techniques such as nonlinear transmission, nonlinear fluorescence, Z-scan, and degenerate four-wave mixing. The pH dependence of the nonlinear response shall also be investigated. The copigmentation effect, in which the anthocyanidin's optical properties are dramatically changed when a copigment is introduced into the solution, shall also be studied by two-photon absorption.
