The Surface Chemistry of Iron Metal in Environmental Remediation Applications

EMSL Project ID
2399

Abstract

This collaboration began during my sabbatical at EMSL during the period of 10/00-06/01. The overall goal was to determine how the surface morphology of iron metal affects its reactivity with aqueous oxidants, especially chlorinated solvents like carbon tetrachloride. The approach is to characterize samples of iron metal, prepared in my laboratory at OGI, using the methods available in the Interfacial Chemistry group at EMSL. The primary contact for the work has been Dan Gaspar.A great deal of research has been done over the last 5-10 years on the reactivity of iron with environmental contaminants such as carbon tetrachloride due to the potential application of iron in technologies for in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater. However, almost all of this work has been based on the kinetics and products observed in batch reactors. Most of this work has assumed that the reaction is occuring as uniform corrosion of the surface, eventhough the possibility for reaction localized at defects on the surface is well known. The project will characterize sames of iron after exposure to carbon tetrachloride using SIMS, XPS, Auger, etc. to try to determine whether reductive dechlorination of the contaminants is occuring uniformly on the passive film or locally in pits, crevices, etc.
