3-Dimensional Reconstruction and Modeling of Bacterial Extracellular Polymeric Substances (ExPS)

EMSL Project ID
26191

Abstract

We propose to apply the method of Cryo-electron tomography for fine scale imaging of the bacterial extracellular polymeric substances (ExPS) in its native state. We will create a 3D model of fully hydrated ExPS complex ultrastructure on a macromolecular assemblies level. This high resolution 3D model will provide central information on the organization and function of this complex polymer system, with important implications in fields of earth science (microbe-mineral and microbe-surface interactions), and medicine.
