Cryo-TEM investigation of polyketide synthase megacomplexes in Candidatus Endobugula sertula and Teredinibacter turnerae

EMSL Project ID
26714

Abstract

This Biological and Life Sciences, Biological Interactions and Interfaces Theme, Standard, General, Non-Proprietary project proposal for use of the EMSL cryo-TEM and tomography facility will focus on investigation of the nature and structure of large intracellular features observed in the cells of the gamma proteobacterial symbiont Candidatus Endobugula sertula. We hypothesize these are megacomplexes of a circa 5 megadalton modular polyketide synthase enzyme system responsible for biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. We will conduct parallel studies on a closely related bacterium, Teredinibacter turnerae.
