Catalytic Studies of Transition Metal Oxide Monolayers Supported on Metal Single Crystal Surfaces
EMSL Project ID

Abstract
Current commercial heterogeneous catalysts are structurally and chemically complex and measurements on them can seldom be interpreted with atomic-level precision. This is especially true for supported transition metal oxide (TMO) catalysts, materials that find applications in a wide-array of industrially important hydrocarbon transformations. Our proposed research is intended to target one particular class of model catalytic TMO materials consisting of ordered TMO monolayers supported on metal single crystals. Such systems will allow for the ultimate control of the structure, composition, and as such will be readily amenable to understanding the structure-reactivity relationships relevant for TMO catalysis. This work will utilize a new experimental capability developed within EMSL laboratory that allows for the preparation and investigation of such tailored systems in addition to the EMSL computational facilities for concurrent modeling of catalytic processes under experimental investigation. Our work will focus on two specific areas: (1) Preparation and Characterization of Supported VxOy and WxOy Monolayers and (2) Partial Oxidation of Alcohols on VxOy and WxOy Monolayers.
