Preparation of Novel Catalysts using Ion Soft-Landing

EMSL Project ID
30445

Abstract

Soft landing of low energy gas-phase ion beams onto suitable substrates is a powerful preparative technique with many potential applications. Various classes of compounds (e.g. proteins, metal clusters and organometallic complexes) have been deposited onto different surfaces. Deposition of mass-selected ions enables highly selective preparation of uniform thin films on surfaces. In addition, gas-phase ion chemistry can be utilized for controlled preparation of projectile ions that cannot be prepared using solution-phase chemistry. Immobilization of transition metal complexes on polymer surfaces is commonly used for preparation of environmentally benign catalysts for organic synthesis. Rational design of metal catalysts immobilized on substrates is an important step towards preparation of catalysts of greatly improved activity and selectivity. This work will explore the potential of the soft-landing technique for preparation of novel catalysts.
Mixed-metal clusters often show stronger reactivity than pure metal clusters in the gas phase. The designated metal catalysts will be generated using atmospheric pressure thermal desorption ionization, acoustic desorption at atmosphere, and/or electrospray ionization sources. This work will provide necessary background for controlled preparation and understanding catalytic reactivity of organometallic clusters prepared by soft-landing on suitable substrates and supports.
