Characterization of Mn Oxidation State with Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy

EMSL Project ID
3130

Abstract

A number of Hanford?s waste storage tanks contain organic complexants that increase the solubility of radioactive strontium (Sr90) and transuranic (TRU) elements. Before this liquid fraction of the Tank Wastes can disposed of as low-activity waste glass, pretreatment is necessary to remove Sr90 and TRU elements. Battelle is developing a pretreatment process that uses permanganate for TRU removal. As part of this effort, we are interested in the nature of the precipitating solid. We need to confirm whether the technique of electron energy loss spectroscopy can be used for determining the oxidation state of manganese.
