Development of an Electrospray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Apparatus with a Low Temperature Ion Trap (Kay's BES-Surface Kinetics, PNNL Scope #16248)

EMSL Project ID
3170a

Abstract

We propose to develop an electrospray photodetachment apparatus with a low temperature ion trap. We have pioneered photoelectron spectroscopic studies of multiply charged anions and solution species in the gas phase using electrospray ionization (ESI). A critical feature of this apparatus is its ability to trap ions and accumulate number density from the CW ESI source for subsequent TOF mass analyses. A low temperature trap will be critical to suppress thermal broadening in the PES spectra and help stabilize weakly bound clusters. Other novel features of the proposed apparatus include pre-mass selection before the ion trapping and a high resolution reflectron TOM mass spectrometer. The new apparatus will be the first prototype of a low-temperature ion trap, which will have major impact in the filed of ion spectroscopy and physical chemistry.
