Fundamentals of Carbonate Formation: Interactions of CO2 with Supported Metal Oxide Clusters

EMSL Project ID
40077

Abstract

We propose to study the fundamental aspects of CO2 adsorption and reactions leading to carbonate (CO32-) formation on well-characterized surfaces and supported nanoclusters of model oxides. Well established methodologies will be used to prepare model surfaces of oxide single crystals (e.g., TiO2(110)) and epitaxial films (e.g., MgO(100), Ni(100), CeO2(111)). Novel methods pioneered in our laboratory will be used to create well defined oxide nanoclusters ranging from their fundamental molecular building blocks (e.g. MgO, NiO, TiO2, CeO2 monomers) to larger nanoclusters of varying sizes. The effect of cluster size and structure on the reactivity of such well defined nanoclusters towards CO and CO2 will be explored.
