Proposal to Apply Capillary Laser Absorption for Trace Isotopic Measurements and Imaging in Biological Systems as a New EMSL Capability
EMSL Project ID
42311
Abstract
We propose a multidisciplinary effort between team members of the Microbial Communities Initiative (MCI) and EMSL to apply the state-of-the art results of previous work performed under the MCI to construct, as a new EMSL user capability, a totally new type of laser ablation and absorption-based system for isotopic measurements on ultra-trace quantities of biological samples. This unique, one-of-a-kind capability will enable a wide range of isotopic studies on biological systems to EMSL users including the capability for isotope imaging on single eukaryotic cells and as few as 10 microbial cells. This capability will expand on and improve EMSL's developing capabilities in elemental and isotopic analysis capability.
