Materials Science Core for NIH Center -Integrating Structure, Activity, Biokinetics and Response for Engineered Nanoparticle (ENP) Risk Assessment
EMSL Project ID
44899
Abstract
This reseach uses EMSL capabilities to synthesize, characterize and deliver well defined nanoparticles for toxicological studies in support of a National Institute of Health Center on the Toxicology of Nanoparticles. The Material Science Core will support the material and characterization needs of Projects 1, 2, and 3. The efforts of the Material Science Core are organized into three main components: 1) manufacture of primary particles (amorphous silica, cerium, and iron oxides) with specific surface modifications; 2) the modification of the primary particles by addition of fluorescent labels to support tracking and quantification in the biological systems under study, and; 3) characterization of nanoparticles. A major focus of the Material Science Core will be completing characterizations in the most appropriate environment for each use.
