Abstract
Exploration of the mechanisms of oxidation-reduction reactions at the mineral fluid interface and transport of reactive components along the grain boundary interface in rocks.Work authorization text added 08/11/05:
This project is a multi-pronged investigation of reactions between minerals and toxic metal-bearing aqueous fluids. We are specifically exploring the mechanisms of oxidation-reduction reactions at the mineral-fluid interface. The project has a number of components: experimental investigation of U reduction by ferrous micas; experimental and theoretical determination of the effect of bonding environment on the XP spectra of Cr(III); and development of TEM methods for imaging valence states of nanoscale precipitates. The first and second components include development of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methodologies to probe sorption behavior and redox reactions at mineral surfaces. The third component includes development of near-atomic-resolution analysis and imaging methodologies of electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), high-angle-annular-dark-field imaging (HAADF) and energy-filtered-transmission-electron-microscopy (EFTEM) in mineralogical systems. We expect to provide the geochemistry community with more detailed knowledge of processes that could affect the fate of U in the environment. This work will also extend the capabilities of both XPS and TEM methodologies and make them more useful for the analysis of environmental and geological processes.
