The CCMEE - Culture Collection of Microorganisms from Extreme Environments as a platform for biodiversity research at EMSL

EMSL Project ID
49673

Abstract

PNNL is home to the CCMEE (Culture Collection of Microorganisms from Extreme Environments), a unique microbial extremophile culture collection. The CCMEE was transferred to EMSL from the University of Oregon and harbors a wide swath of biodiversity in terms of cyanobacterial- and red algae-dominated samples collected from a range of extreme habitats. It is a rich source of genetically and biochemically diverse microbial communities that could be used in a variety of fundamental microbiological research aligned with programs. This staff proposal focuses on stabilizing the culture collection for use in general research projects that require use of the diversity of phototrophic samples archived in the collection.
