Defect Production, Diffusion and Precipitation in Ion-Implanted Ceria

EMSL Project ID
50120

Abstract

We suggest using TEM-EDS to study the changes a simulated nuclear fuel (pulsed-laser deposited doped CeO2 films) undergoes during I ion irradiation at temperatures relevant to a nuclear reactor. FIB lamellae will be created before and after each irradiation experiment to evaluate the size, density and composition of resulting Epsilon-particles. Atom-probe needles will be lifted-out with the FIB from the irradiated films and characterization will be carried out to quantify the concentration of trace elements. Further FIB lamellae will be produced for in-situ irradiation experiments in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratory.
