Extracellular Research Thrust for EMSL SSA

Abstract

Here we propose to address the basic geochemical and biogeochemical interactions that mediate organic-mineral interactions. Identifying binding mechanisms at the organic matter-mineral interface will enable quantification of binding strengths of classes of organic molecules with known chemistry, which will facilitate predictions of how plant and microbially derived compounds are stabilized in soil. To test the molecular mechanisms regulating the stabilization and release of biopolymers on organic-mineral surfaces, a simplified model system will be used to generate empirical results to test the findings of (Andersen et al. 2016, Reardon et al. 2016). Molecular dynamics calculations will be carried out to determine the specific molecular interactions on different crystallographic surfaces of the mineral as in the previous study (Andersen et al. 2016, and Andersen unpublished). We will extend these modeling results to minerals relevant to our local Prosser soil concurrent with pilot experiments in native soils.
