New Method for Sequential Extraction of Microbes and Biomolecules from Soil

EMSL Project ID
50186

Abstract

The goal of this project is to develop a sequential extraction method that is based on the affinity of biomolecules and microbes to soil particles. By using sequentially harsher extractions, we will be able to target those compounds that are loosely bound to soils, determine the populations of microbes that are loosely versus tightly bound, and target those biomolecules that have a high affinity for soils and could comprise bio-unavailable necromass. Such studies would form the basis for determining interactions of microbes with extracellular organic and inorganic compounds in soil.
