Identifying aqueous SOA tracers from oxidation of phenols in biomass burning aerosols

EMSL Project ID
50676

Abstract

Recent DOE- supported field measurements provide a wealth of high resolution mass spectrometry data using instruments such as HR-ToF-AMS and SPLAT II over different locations (e.g. over Oklahoma City and the Amazon rainforest). However, challenges remain in terms of identifying unique aqueous SOA mass spectral features in these measurements. This proposal aims to fill a critical gap in analysis of these field measurements by conducting new laboratory experiments to elucidate unique biomass burning aqueous SOA mass spectral features through characterization of the same instruments (HR-ToF-AMS and SPLAT II) taken during the recent Holistic Interactions of Shallow Clouds, Aerosols, and Land Ecosystems (HI-SCALE) and the Green Ocean Amazon (GoAmazon 2014/5) field campaigns. SPLAT II will also be used to characterize changes in volatility and composition during aqueous-phase chemistry of biomass burning organics for the first time, in this proposed work.
