Microstructural Evolution under Shear Deformation
EMSL Project ID

Abstract
Solid phase processing (SPP) of alloys using shear-deformation results in nanoscale metastable phases and enhanced mechanical properties. High-speed mass and energy transfer during such process makes the atomic-scale mechanisms in solid phase processing quite complex to understand in real time. Hence as a part of solid phase processing initiative in PNNL, we use an array of shear deformation capabilities ranging from a pin-on-disk tribometer, in situ rotational diamond anvil cell, atomic force microscopy and in situ shear deformation in transmission electron microscope to emulate localized shear deformation conditions and characterize microstructures before-after processing using advanced multimodal microstructural characterization.
