Solar Photolysis of Dissolved Organic Matter in the Presence of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

EMSL Project ID
51434

Abstract

We propose to conduct the photodegradation on two dissolved organic matter (DOM) samples in the presence of hematite nanoparticles under solar light for the first time. This treatment will produce reactive oxygen species to abiotically oxidize organic molecules from the two DOM samples. Characterization of carbon chemistry on DOM samples before and after photodegradation at the molecular scale is critical for us to have a better understanding of the dynamics of carbon chemical compositions of environmental DOM samples resulting from various pathways of photodegradation.
