NMR characterization of rubber materials for hydrogen compatibility

EMSL Project ID
51572

Abstract

The main aim of this proposal is to identify hydrogen species (free, dissolved, or reacted) in two types of rubber materials, acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM). The specific goals of this proposal are (1) in-situ identification of hydrogen species under 200 psi hydrogen pressure and (2) measurement of dissolved or reacted hydrogen in rubber materials of treated rubber materials under 100 MPa H2. In addition, the structural properties of the rubber materials and dynamics of confined gas will be tested with 129Xe pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR and exchange spectroscopy (EXSY).
