3D pore-scale characterization of soil cores in EMSL: Imaging - Pore Network Analysis - Flow and Transport Properties workflow

EMSL Project ID
60089

Abstract

As part of a larger effort to establish a soil characterization capability that will make EMSL a one-stop shop for high-throughput characterization of soil microstructure, flow and transport properties, and nutrient/ organic matter (OM) characterization for users, we will develop a workflow that consist of (1) 3D imaging, (2) full pore network characterization, and (3) measurement of flow and transport properties of soil cores. The 3D soil structure models created from x-ray imaging data, the resulting pore network model, and properties such as pore connectivity, permeability, and tortuosity will be applicable as input to pore-scale, computational fluid dynamics, as well as reactive transport models.
