Increased confidence, coverage, and characterization of organic matter through online liquid chromatography hybrid FT-Orbitrap-21T ICR mass spectrometry

EMSL Project ID
60885

Abstract

Direct infusion (DI) mass spectrometry analysis of organic matter (OM) is one of EMSL’s primary workflows. It is a powerful and popular means to characterize complex environmental samples. However, DI suffers from several major issues which impede analysis and interpretation – matrix effects, ionization suppression, and a lack of structural or isomeric resolution. Online liquid chromatography (LC) can mitigate some of these issues. Leveraging recent developments in the literature, and upgraded instrumentation at EMSL, we will couple LC to FTMS for analysis of OM samples. This will yield data which are more quantitative, amenable to structural characterization through tandem mass spectrometry, increase molecular coverage, and increase confidence in molecular formula annotation, all while requiring minimally increased instrument time.
