SoilTwin – A digital twin for efficient and accurate upscaling of soil data to PFLOTRAN

EMSL Project ID
60904

Abstract

Our project aims to develop a simple digital twin, “SoilTwin,” for efficient and accurate upscaling of soil data to PFLOTRAN. Soil data collected by EMSL include X-ray computed tomography (XCT), chemical composition from spectroscopy instruments (SEM-EDX), and breakthrough curves from hydraulic experiments. These multimodal datasets are needed to characterize the soil structure, influencing organic matter retention, transport, and distribution. However, manual processing of XCT and SEM-EDX can be inconsistent. As a result, it may ignore a lot of data that can be informative and useful for downstream modeling pipelines such as PFLOTRAN. The proposed SoilTwin framework will allow users to automate the time-consuming cumbersome data processing and seamlessly integrate soil structural information into PFLOTRAN modeling.
