X-ray Tomography of medical products for Import into the PUFFIn simulation code.

Abstract

A software tool has been created for the simulation of electron and X-Ray sources in support of the DOE goal to advance alternative technologies to radioisotope-based gamma for sterilization of medical products. This software tool is called PENELOPE User Friendly Fast Interface (PUFFIn). A presentation of this software made at the IAEA can be found here:

To accurately represent the products that will be irradiated, an accurate 3D model of the product and packing must be modeled in PUFFIn. It is proposed that these models be created using X-ray Tomography to produce DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) format (.dcm) files that can then be imported into the PUFFIn code for the simulation of radiation beams. This capability has been demonstrated for an example DICOM file; it is now proposed to scan the actual products.
