Abstract
Carbon dioxide is one of the most simple and abundant molecules on earth as it plays a critical role in biological lifecycles as a feedstock for plants to chemically store energy in hydrocarbons and conversely a byproduct of hydrocarbon combustion. However, CO2 is kinetically and thermodynamically unreactive, thus any energy-related process of either capturing or converting CO2 is a grand challenge. In this proposal, we want to be able to measure the speciation of the gas and liquid phases of carbon capture solvents and understand the reactivity and kinetics of chemical transformations of CO2 inside. This proposal would deliver critical data on carbon capture and catalysis approaches that support fundamental and applied research. Further, these systems also provide challenging reaction conditions that push the boundaries of EMSL’s NMR capability, thus helping operators continue to build upon their world-leading capabilities and methodologies.
