Heather Olson
Chemist
Heather Olson is a chemist with the Biomolecular Pathways team. She performs sample preparation and sample management for a wide variety of sample types, including bacteria (biosafety levels 1 and 2), viruses, soils, plants, tissues (mammalian), algae, and fungi. She specializes in performing multi-omics preparations from challenging sample types, such as working with extremely small masses of protein, extracting protein from highly complex matrices, and overcoming sample contamination issues. Olson’s analytical chemistry background allows her to work with large numbers of samples, as well as extremely complex preparation techniques. She also has experience with the use and maintenance of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), GC-mass spectrometry (MS), and HPLC-MS instrumentation which is often used to make sure the analytical HPLC’s used in the preparation laboratory are working properly.
Before joining EMSL, Olson worked with the Toxicokinetic and Bioanalytical Chemistry group at PNNL and a geochemistry and analytical chemistry laboratory in Spokane, Washington. This background enables her to provide high-quality and innovative sample preparation methods to further the scientific goals of the principal investigators and collaborators she works with daily.
