James Carr
Data Engineer

James Carr is a data engineer at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), where he collaborates on many projects. Carr utilizes many different skills to “build cool stuff” and bridge gaps between scientists and developers. Carr has more than two decades of technical experience spanning everything from software development to cybersecurity. His educational background is in biology, focusing on bioinformatics and genomics.

Carr works on Science Central™, the Molecular Observation Network, and various projects utilizing large language models (LLMs) to interact with data and improve user experience. Carr is also involved in the development and deployment of mass spectrometry data processing pipelines and EMSL’s Laboratory Information Management System. Carr represents EMSL in a cross-organizational effort by the Department of Energy, Office of Science, Biological and Environmental Research (BER) program to consolidate and harmonize scientific data. Carr is also passionate about mentoring young scientists and developers to find their way in the world.
