The Study of Atomic Gold Clusters in Polyaniline (Summer Research Institute, PNNL Scope #16248)

EMSL Project ID
10602

Abstract

Previous reserch done in our Group in collaboration with the PNNL scientists, Don Baer and Mark Engelhard, has shown that polyaniline (PANI) can be used as a matrix for formation of Au clusters. By a tight control of the electrochemical experiment it is possible to prepare these clusters by stepwise, atom by atom procedure. The proposed work done at the EMSL will involve characterization of these materials by HR XPS, AFM, HR TEM and possibly by laser ablation MS. This project is part of a broader, NSF funded work done at the Georgia Tech. If successful this project could lead to development of a proposal in the catalysis and electrocatalysis area.
As a back-up project we are proposing to explore the possibility of conducting electrochemical polymerization of aniline in room temperature ionic liquids under vacuum conditions. The key idea is to utilize the zero volatility of room temperature ionic liquids for performing in-situ vacuum electrochemical experiments. It is expected that PNNL collaborator on this part of the project will be Chuck Windisch.
