Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution using a commercial activated carbon coated with quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine)
EMSL Project ID
13496
Abstract
In this study, a polymeric adsorbent (GAC-QPVP) was prepared by quaternizing and coating poly(4-vinylpyridine) on a commercial activated carbon (F400, Calgon). Batch experiments showed that the coated materials can efficiently remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions, indicating potential application in waste water treatment industry. However, the mechanism of Cr(VI) removal was unclear. The Cr(VI) was removed either through simple adsorption or coupled adsorption and reduction. The XPS and IR at EMSL will be used to distinguish these two mechanisms.
