Environmental Sensitive Surface Prepared from Plasma Technology

EMSL Project ID
1619

Abstract

This project focuses on developing scientific knowledge of self-assembled smart surfaces and applying molecular and material sciences to enhance the functionality of microstructures by incorporating molecular and polymeric smart surfaces. The central scientific issue is to use plasma technology to graft functional polymer on the surface of different materials.Various materials will be evaluated, in particular, thermal, electric field, and photosensitive polymers. The mechanism of plasa and post-polymerization should be studied based on the characteristics of fuctional surface. New materials will be designed that can be actuated by novel thermal, optical, electrical, magnetic, or electrochemical means. The grafted surface could be used as biochemical separation medium, high efficiency separationmembrane and chemical sensor.
