Investigations of ZrO2 and NaNO3 Interfaces using HREELM

EMSL Project ID
1636

Abstract

We have been involved in several joint projects which investigate the role of surface excitations in low-energy electron- and photon-stimulated desorption phenomena. Thus far, we have examined the energy-loss and x-ray photoelectron spectra of ZrO2 and NaNO3 surfaces at CNR, Rome. These are environmentally relevant materials and are involved in the storage of mixed (chemical/radioactive) wastes. We will perform scanning Auger analysis of these samples at EMSL and will also perform reflected electron energy loss microscopy (REELM) of the same surfaces. The use of REELM is novel and will extend the capability of the EMSL scanning Auger system.
