Characterization of tungsten carbide synthesized by controlled template method

EMSL Project ID
16590

Abstract

High purity tungsten carbide materials with high surface area and porosity can provide technically and economically attractive alternates for platinum in an electrocatalysis. We are developing novel synthesis methods for and nanocrystalline forms of tungsten carbide (WC) with controlled morphology and purity. Transmission electrom microscopy is a powerful tool to study the morphology.
We plan to synthesize tungsten carbide with different W/C ration, reaction temperature, duration and templates.
Then XRD and BET are performed to determine the crystalline purity and surface area.. TEM can provide the morphology and size distribution of nanocrystalline tungsten carbide. XPS is carried out to the surface study for various treatment condtion.
