Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry of Organic Aerosols (Alexander's STTR, PNNL Scope #48597)

EMSL Project ID
16703

Abstract

The proposed work will demonstrate a prototype particle collection and vaporizer for use with the proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS). This device will allow the PTR-MS to measure both gas phase organics and particulate matter organics. Organic compounds have been found to be a major chemical constituent of PM throughout the troposphere, comprising between 20 and 60% of the dry particle mass at rural surface sites in the US. The molecular identity and the sources of these organic compounds are poorly understood and there is a need to develop better analytical techniques to measure atmospheric concentrations of organic PM.
