Coal Surface Charging Property Characterization

EMSL Project ID
1715

Abstract

The goal is to advance the fundamental understanding of the electrostatic properties of coal and mineral particles and apply to advanced technology for dry coal beneficiation and mineral separation. The objective is to correlate the electrostatic charging characteristics of coal with such characteristics as mineral inclusions, effective work function, and absorbed gases. Data will be collected using four surface investigation techniques: (1) UPS to determine the work function, (2) EPM to determine surface charge transfer, (3) small-spot XPS to determine surface chemistry, and (4) AES to measure surface oxide thickness.
