Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry for Planetary Surface Instruments

EMSL Project ID
1723

Abstract

We are developing a geochemistry instrument for deployment on the surface of Mars. Ion trap mass spectrometry may be an appropriate mass detection technique for this instrument. Michael Alexander and I will use his facilities to conduct a feasibility study. Specifically, we will use ion trap mass spectrometry in conjunction with laser ablation to determine isotope distributions in previously characterized materials. We will modify trapping and ablation parameters to maximize mass resolution and suitability for space travel.
