The iron binding environment of the cyanobacterial ferric ion transporter, FutA1

EMSL Project ID
17392

Abstract

The goal of this work is to use EPR to examine the iron binding environment and the processes involved in iron binding in the ferric transporter, FutA1, from cyanobacteria. We have the high resolution crystal structures of both the free and iron bound forms. These studies will allow us to better understand how ion selectivity is exacted and the processes involved in iron binding and transport. We will run spectra on both the bound and free forms. By dropping the pH of the bound form, we can make the iron disassociate and monitor binding/disassociation in that manner and then compare the results to the X-ray structure.
