Abstract
A strong collaborative connection between WSU and EMSL is already established, as is evident from the number of collaborative research publications that have resulted. This proposal aims to increase the effectiveness of this collaboration and produce additional publications that are important for both WSU and EMSL scientists. Key aspects targeted in this proposal include:1. Test and characterization of FTICR-MS amplifiers.
2. Development of custom ion transmission strategies based on the concepts of restrained ion population transfer or RIPT.
3. Align WSU electronics development capabilities for advanced FTICR mass spectrometry with those at PNNL so that developments efforts can provide increased benefits for both labs.
To accomplish these advancements, it is requested that Dave Prior (EMSL) visit WSU labs and work with scientists to carry out testing and development efforts. In addition, it is requested that Gunnar Skulason (WSU) visit and work with engineers in the IDL to gain further knowledge and skills relevant to advanced FTICR-MS electronics development.
The benefits of this proposal include the development of scientific capabilities that will further advance the state-of-the-art in mass spectrometry and proteomics research. This research will result in collaborative publications that will directly benefit ESML and WSU scientists that are involved in the work. Furthermore, the capabilities resultant form these efforts can be adopted at both WSU and EMSL labs to increase the sensitivity and dynamic range of proteome measurements. Thus, this research will also directly improve the ability of the EMSL to attract users, since these advances will provide unique capabilities for systems biology research.
