Infrared Absortion Cross Sections of Acetone and Acetic Acid

EMSL Project ID
18396

Abstract

Using the Bruker high resolution Fourier transform infrared spectrometer faclity of EMSL, the infrared absorption cross sections of acetone and acetic acid vapors are to be determined as functions of pressure and temperature over the spectral range from 500 cm-1 to 3600 cm-1 and over the temperature range from 200 K to 300 K. This work is to be done on behalf of NASA as part of their Upper Atmosphere Research Program. Acetone and acetic acid are minor, yet significant, constituents of the earth's atmosphere and play a role in its chemistry. This work is to be done in collaboration with Dr. W.J. Lafferty of NIST, and Drs. T.A Blake and R.L. Sams of PNNL.
