Selective External Accumulation for FT-ICR-MS
EMSL Project ID
1930
Abstract
The proposed project is to spend some time learning how to do external accumulation of ions for Fourier Transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). The information gathered from the visit would be used in the design and implementation of a similar ion source at the University of Delaware. The desired method to achieve the goal of external accumulation is through the use of the ion funnel concept, developed by Richard D. Smith and coworkers at EMSL, coupled to a series of quadrupole mass filters. This type of system has already been implemented on a 3.5 Tesla FT-ICR instrument in the Smith lab. The ultimate goal of the visit is to bring this type of technology back to the University of Delaware and implement a similar device on our own 7 Tesla FT-ICR instrument. The best way to achieve this goal is by working closely with the members of the Smith group who built and are currently testing this new type of external ion source .
