Structure Determination of Cyclic Siloxane
EMSL Project ID
1956
Abstract
A presumed cyclic siloxane has been observed after the synthesis of specific aromatic co-polymers prepared by hydrosilylation techniques. Some synthetic procedures produce up to 50% of the cyclic component compared to 4-9% obtained with other processes. To estabilish a rationale for the results, the identity of the cyclic product needs to be determined. IR suggests no active end-groups and, thus, acyclic structure. NMR confirms this and proposes a quite small strcture confimrs this and proposes a quite small structure of Mw ~900. Unfortunately, this does not allow a cyclic product incorporating both monomers with a unit Mw of 624. Thus, we hope to gain insight of the Mw and structure of this very viscous oil/gum. To accomplish this, we presume that MS, with electrospray, would provide the most direct answers to the structure question.
