AFM Characterization of Self-assembled Heterogenite Particles

EMSL Project ID
2155

Abstract

My samples are micron-sized hexagonal plates (CoOOH) which are assembled from oriented 3-5 nm building block crystallites. I am hoping to characterize the nm-scale topography of these particles in order to determine how the building blocks are networked together. TEM can not elucidate manner in which the particles assemble because the plates are on the order of 25-35 nm thick, which makes imaging a single layer of building block crystallites impossible. Understanding the detailed organization of the building block crystallites will help elucidate the mechanisms driving the assembly process.
