The characterization of the solid state materials with planar carbon cluster unit

EMSL Project ID
2205a

Abstract

The goal of this project is to investigate the structure and composition of new materials. We have obtained the LDRD seeds support: Synthesis of Novel Nanocluster-based Materials. This project has two parts: solution synthesize and solid state synthesize of new materials. The second part is to synthesize the Al-based nano-cluster materials (Al13-)Li+ and tetracoordinate -planar carbon molecule materials (CAl4) 2-Li+2. With the funding from Washington State University, this work has started and the X-ray diffraction experimental has been done on some samples. In fact, XRD works well for the materials with the structure known, for the material with structure unknown XRD can only give some hint on the structure of the systems, the detail structure and the composition of the systems need further experimental characterization through SEM and correlated methods. From the previous solid synthesis work, we found that the samples are multiple-phase, they have different composition and different structure. According to the known database, some new kind of materials are found in our samples, the structure and composition of these new materials need to be determined. Actually, in order to obtain the pursued materials, we have to have the related information about the experimental condition(the concentration of different reagents and the baking time and temperature) and the obtained materials after each baking, this is very important for modification of the receipt of the solid state synthesis, and it is the most important step for finally achieving the goal material.
