Aerosol particle generation, collection, and analysis.

EMSL Project ID
2207

Abstract

Particle generation will be achieved via nucleation of supersaturated vapor of different substances (primary interest - alcohols and alkanes) using the laminar flow tube reactor (LFTR), and also by liquid spraying using a nebulizer. Particle concentration and size composition measurement will be made using condensation particle counters and aerosol size analyzer for the vapor phase and fluorometry for the liquid phase. Standard (polysterene latex, etc) particle samples will be used for calibration purposes. Chemical composition analysis of the freshly nucleated particles will be achieved via a direct interface between the laminar flow tube reactor and the quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS). The LFTR has been designed and built at EMSL for the purpose of laboratory studies of tropospheric nucleation under the DOE ACP project. The interface with the quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) has been made as well. Particle collection and concentration into a liquid via cyclone technology will be measured using Fluorescence Spectrometry Analysis.
